In 1996 Thievery Corporation released Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi; an album that defined an entire genre of music and crystallized their distinct "outernational sound" aesthetic. Over the next 14 years the duo would write and record four more critically accliamed studio albums, three remix albums, and various DJ mixes and film soundtracks. Now Rob Garza and Eric Hilton have selected their favorite Thievery Corporation tracks and are set to present It Takes a Thief; their first retrospective album chronicling over a decade of revolutionary outernational sounds. Spreading their unique sound far and wide, Garza and Hilton were always great admirers and curators of dusty grooves and all but forgotten musical styles. They borrow from the classically sensual and blunted sounds of their favorite Brazilian bossa nova, Jamaican dub reggae, vintage film soundtracks, Afrobeat, Latin and psychedelic rock to forge into new sonic territory.

Forward is not just a direction, it's a way of life for Colorado based producer Alex B who is rolling out big tunes under the new guise of Paper Diamond. The new project finds the trusted producer moving into previously untraveled musical territory. The Paper Diamond sound has raw energy and the kind of dramatic anticipation only a seasoned producer can incite. Driving beats and bass grab on tight while deep, rich tones rumble under layers of spacey synthesizers, sweet melodies, and catchy vocals. One thing is for sure. The energy is high.

For Gregg Gillis, the Girl Talk project has always been about embracing pop music. On his fourth album, Feed the Animals, Girl Talk celebrates pop to the extreme and continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live shows. Using 300 samples in over 50 minutes, Gillis has created his most heavy-hitting, party-centric album yet. He has refined his skill and technique and challenged himself with each new release, and in turn Gillis has solidified a specific musical identity and successfully created a particular style of music on record and in a live setting that excites listeners and makes them hungry for more.

Grammy winner Ryan Bingham's (for the '09 track The Weary Kind featured in Crazy Heart) Lost Highway debut album, Mescalito, finds Bingham digging deep into raw-boned country and revisiting his border-town upbringing. Every note of the 14-song disc is an expression of Bingham's unusually full life, both the good and the bad. His preternaturally wizened voice and his remarkably poignant songs resonate with roadhouse wisdom and rough-and-ready border town piquancy.

Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero have been playing guitar together for more than 15 years. To date, they have sold over one million albums worldwide and become a fixture on the world music circuit. Their willingness to explore musical expressions, to embrace new sounds irrespective of fashion or trends; and a point blank refusal to be pigeon-holed as any particular genre, is the very foundation of Rodrigo y Gabriela and leaves us with the feeling that we have only begun to see what these two are capable of.

The dubstep electronic genre has emerged as a force in the United States, and no one embodies its momentum more than San Jose based artist NiT GriT. One of the most prolific and hardworking of the new field of dubstep/grime performers, his current music was formed in his home turf of the Bay Area from a background in glitch, idm, and breakcore, and is set apart by its soulfulness and melody. True to the trend towards dramatic entrances in so many of the new fraternity of sensational dubstep artists, NiT GriT burst on the scene with his first show in March 2010 in a co-billing with Excision.

Most rock and roll bands are a tightly wound unit that developed their music through years of playing in garages and clubs around their hometown. Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock and roll conventions. Becker and Fagen never truly enjoyed rock - with their ironic humor and cryptic lyrics, their eclectic body of work shows some debt to Bob Dylan - preferring jazz, traditional pop and blues. Steely Dan created a sophisticated, distinctive sound wi6th accessible melodic hooks, complex harmonies and time signatures, and a devotion to the recording studio. Even after the group disbanded in the early 80s, their records retained a cult following, as proven by the massive success of their unlikely return to the stage in the early 90s.

In just a year or so, soulsters Fitz and the Tantrums went from the living room to the main stage. The recipe for meteoric success? Six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, some serendipity and one vintage organ. Since their first show at Hollywood's Hotel Cafe in Dec. 08, Fitz & Co. have toured with Maroon 5, played to thousands at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, shared the stage New Year's Even with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and performed on KCRW's esteemed show, Morning Becomes Electric. For some bands it takes a lifetime to build this success, but few performers deliver an unrestrained blast of soul-capping, get-down-on-the-floor, moneymaker shakers like Fitz and the Tantrums.

Unlikely doesn't even begin to describe Porter Robinson's rapid ascent to the forefront of the world of dance music. After an eventful year on the charts and on the road, 2010 Grammy Award winning Best New Artist Zac Brown Band has proven that "overnight success" can be years in the making. New fans drawn by the irresistible hit singles, the awe-inspiring musicianship and dynamic live shows, might have thought the Zac Brown Band emerged from nowhere. In fact, the band has paid its dues for years and put in its time for just this moment, it may have happened quickly, but it's definitely built to last. The band's first major label release "The Foundation" was one of Billboard's Top 20 albums of 2009 and was the first major label debut album in 18 years to yield five number 1s. Their second major studio album "You Get What You Give" was released in Sept. '10 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. "There's no way to predict how fast everything is going to come together" states Zac. "Or that it took 13 years to get to the beginning of it."
